Round 1 votes already has demonstrated that umpires can certainly see games a lot different to the media and experienced onlookers.
Melbourne v Gold Coast Tom McDonald was adjudged best on by the Heraldsun, afl.com, received maximum votes in the AFLCA votes as voted by both coaches, also had the second most possessions in the match with 26 the most marks with 12 but still didn't get any votes.
The Sydney v Essendon game is the most perplexing with Ben Howlett getting 3 votes for his 19 possession game although he did have 12 tackles, Jack got 2 which wasn't surprising but Tippett getting 1 vote is the most baffling, he had 10 touches, 3 marks and 2 goals with 22 hit outs. Considering Parker had 35, Kennedy 30 even Franklin had 12 touches and 3 goals had more influence, in fact if you were to award votes 10-1 I would be surprised if any knowledgeable person would give Tippett or Howlett even a vote out of 10.
